Nick Cahill’s Plumbing & Heating

Nick Cahill's Plumbing & Heating useful tips to reduce your home heating costs and improve your home energy efficiency

With the gas and electricity increases now faced by us all, there is no time to waste, reducing your bills.

The company strives to improve efficiencies, on all our installations and boiler services. With our vast experience in the industry, we have compiled 5 top tips to improve your heating requirements.

Our 5 Top Tips To Reduce Energy Costs:

1. If you have a none condensing boiler. It is time to consider replacing it. Modern condensing boilers use a massive 30% less gas.

2. Fit and use thermostatic radiator valves (TRV's). The required temperature in each room, can then be set individually.

3. Modern panel radiators with convectors, radiate heat much more efficiently than older radiators. We recommend the Henrad Compact Range.

4. Modern controls that comply with the Boiler Plus legislation, reduce gas usage by around 3%. We recommend internet based models, Worcester Easy Control or Nest. The Worcester Comfort 2 is very good for those who prefer a more traditional system.

5. Annual boiler servicing is essential to keep your appliance working efficiently. It is also a stipulation of the manufactures guarantee.

SEDBUK - Seasonal Efficiency Domestic Boiler UK

What are SEDBUK efficiency ratings?

SEDBUK stands for "seasonal efficiency of a domestic boiler in the UK" it used to be shown as a letter but is now shown as percentage ratings. The percntage score is an estimation of the efficiency of the boiler.

How are SEDBUK ratings calculated?

The SEDBUK rating enables you to fairly compare different models of boiler.

Conventional boilers have a Sedbuk rating from around 66-81% efficient, while condensing boilers are between 85% and 91% efficient (SAP 2005).

"Efficiency comparison improvements chart" - based on the end users boiler which is possibly been replaced. The chart is a handy and industry backed performance indicator based on the Sedbuk ratings from 2009.

"Reliably inefficient" - in most instances you may find that your trusted boiler in your home depending on the age, could still be very reliable, and has served you, and your family well. You may have great knowledge of how it works, and amassed a number of spares, to keep the boiler running into the future in anticipation of any problems which may occur. However the boiler is "reliable but inefficient", compared to a new condensing boiler, and using more technically advanced controls.

"Efficiently reliable" - this is the where you need to be positioned today. A new Worcester "A" rated boiler performs, and can achieve over 90% efficiency.

The controls selected to operate with the boiler are equally important. The controls need to be equipped with integral automatic adjustments, such as temperature measuring efficiency features (load compensation) as standard. Controls that offer more than "delayed start" will mean greater efficiency savings in the future. These controls will increase efficiency by +3%.

With the cost of living highlighted today, an "efficiently reliable" heating system is definitely what you need now.

Frequently Frequently Asked Questions

1. Are gas boiler been phased out in 2025?

No. Gas boilers have only been phased out of new build developments homes, and will not be fitted after 2025. The plan has already started with a number of new developments designed for heat pumps.

2. What is a heat pump?

A heat pump is an electric driven device, which can produce heating and hot water, using a refrigerant. The most common heat pump is air to water. The general principle of the heat pumps are based on the principles of air conditioning. The heating principle is made up of a compressor, evaporator, and condensing circuit.

Frequently Frequently Asked Questions

3. Is my house suitable for a heat pump?

Depending on the year your home was built, the level of insulation within the property, the type of build e.g cavity filled walls or no internal insulation between the brick and blockwork, concrete uninsulated floors, to name a few points, will determine the suitability.

4. Do heat pumps save money?

This again depends on the house interior, and exterior structure, fabric, and build quality, as detailed above.

If the house has a high Energy Efficiency rating at least "level C" or has been upgraded to a standard where a heat pump can be incorporated, then it may provide a comparable performance to gas.

5. Is electric heating cheaper to run than gas?

No, gas is still the cheapest fuel to heat the average home. Currently the rises in gas and electricity rates continue to rise together. The sustainable performance of houses needs to improve before some electric appliances can perform, equal to gas based on the low circulation temperatures provided, for example heat pumps.

The simple rule is – gas boilers provide a higher circulation temperature, heat pumps have a lower circulating temperature. If your house has a low sustainability rating, or EPC rating, it will probably need a high circulating temperature boiler to maintain a suitable liveable temperature in the home.

Note – most calculations for domestic home heating are carried out using a heat loss calculation.

Until we only need to calculate the energy needed to heat the room, the property is likely to have a low sustainability rating.

6. What is this new Hydrogen fuel?

Part of the low carbon fuel technology which is the direction of fuel energy supply and usage for domestic and commercial heating. Hydrogen is a carbon free fuel which meets the government guidelines towards their decarbonization plan.

7. What is Hydrogen blend?

Hydrogen blend is the mixture of the normal gas, which is been delivered to your home, mixed with approx. 20% Hydrogen. A range of Hydrogen blend boiler has been produced by Worcester Bosch.

8. How can I reduce my heating bills

With a range of simple initiatives, and home improvements you can reduce your utility bills. Considering some hybrid options for example solar thermal, or a Worcester gas combination boiler with a cylinder for summer months.
